16)On Pain痛苦

And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain.
接著有個婦人說︰請說一說痛苦吧。
And he said:
他回答說︰
Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.
你的痛苦就是當你突破封住你領悟的殼時所帶來的痛苦
Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun,
就好比果實的核，必須要裂開而使它的心曝曬於陽光之下。
so must you know pain.
所以你也必須體會痛苦。
And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life,
倘若你能保持你自己的心，對於你每日生活中的奇蹟感到驚奇，
your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy;
你的痛苦便不會比你的快樂少一分驚奇了。
And you would accept the seasons of your heart,
你便會接受你心中的每一個季節，
even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields.
就好比你們一向接受那越過你的田地的每一個季節一般。
And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief.
你便會平靜地守候以度過痛苦的冬季。
Much of your pain is self-chosen.
你多半的痛苦都是自找的。
It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.
它是你內心的醫生用來治療心病的苦藥。
Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquillity:
因此，相信醫生，沉默平靜地喝下他的良藥吧﹗
For his hand, though heavy and hard,
因為他的手雖然粗重嚴厲，
is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen,
卻是冥冥之中的造物主用輕柔的手在引領著；
And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips,
他帶來的杯子雖然灼痛了你的唇，
has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears.
卻是陶瓷匠用他自己神聖的淚水去滋潤陶土而製成的。
