18)On Teaching教育

Then said a teacher, Speak to us of Teaching.
接著有位老師說︰跟我們講一講教育吧。
And he said:
他回答說︰
No man can reveal to you aught
沒有任何人能啟示你什麼
but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge.
除了那些在你們知識的黎明中已呈半睡半醒的知識。
The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers,
那在廟宇蔭涼處和弟子一起散步著的教師，
gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.
他給予弟子可說是他的信仰和愛，而不是他的智慧。
If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom,
他如果真有智慧，就不會邀你進入他的智慧宮殿，
but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.
而寧願引導你到達你自己心裡的門檻.
The astronomer may speak to you of his understanding of space,
天文學家可以告訴你他對太空的了解，
but he cannot give you his understanding.
卻不能把他所了解的完全讓你明白.
The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space,
音樂家可以對你歌唱出那來自全宇宙的韻律，
but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm, nor the voice that echoes it.
但他卻無法給你能捉住這韻律的耳朵和能回應它的嗓言。
And he who is versed in the science of numbers can tell of the regions of weight and measure,
精於數理的人，能告訴你應用度量衡的知識，
but he cannot conduct you thither.
卻不能引領你進入他的知識領域之中。
For the vision of one man lends not its wings to another man.
因為一個人的想像力無法將其羽翼借予他人。
And even as each one of you stands alone in God's knowledge,
有如你們每個人都各自存在上帝的心中，
so must each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God
因此你們每一個人也要個別了解上帝,
and in his understanding of the earth.
和對這片大地的了解。
